Andres Laverde

A Global Career in Geothermal Energy

From the Classroom in Bogotá to the Global Energy Fields

Andrés Laverde’s passion for the Earth’s natural systems has taken him on a remarkable journey from Bogotá, Colombia, to Iceland and beyond. While studying Geosciences at Los Andes University, Andrés developed a deep interest in volcanology, geothermal resources, and sustainability. His undergraduate research laid the foundation for a career that now spans continents and disciplines.

Seeking to expand his expertise, Andrés discovered the Iceland School of Energy at Reykjavik University. He took advantage of the Colfuturo program in Colombia, which provides financial support to talented students pursuing advanced degrees abroad. This opportunity allowed him to study in Iceland, a country renowned for its geothermal energy and volcanic landscapes.

"Iceland is a dream for any geologist passionate about volcanoes and geothermal energy," Andrés explains. "ISE allowed me to deepen my expertise in geothermal energy while broadening my perspective on sustainability and policy-making."

At ISE, Andrés thrived in an international environment, collaborating with classmates from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. "Learning from people around the world was one of the most rewarding aspects of my time at ISE," he says. Outside the classroom, Iceland’s unique landscapes inspired him, with its black sands, green hills, and towering volcanoes becoming a favorite part of his experience.

A Career in Geothermal Energy

After graduating in 2020, Andrés joined Arctic Green Energy as a geothermal energy engineer. Over the years, his role has expanded. He travels the world as part of his work, supporting projects that leverage geothermal energy to drive sustainable development. His responsibilities include assessing geothermal resources, developing models, and managing GIS data, all critical to the company’s portfolio.

Giving Back to the Community

Andrés remains deeply connected to ISE and its mission. Today, he contributes to the next generation of energy professionals by teaching in the Energy Field School and co-teaching the Conceptual Modeling for Geothermal Energy course alongside fellow ISE alumni working in Iceland. Additionally, Andrés works with ISE interns at Arctic Green Energy, offering them mentorship and hands-on experience in energy projects.

Inspiring Future Innovators

For prospective students, Andrés offers this advice:

"ISE provides not just an education but an opportunity to grow within a supportive, inclusive, and inspiring environment. Iceland is the perfect place to combine academic learning with practical experience and cultural exploration."

From Bogotá to Iceland and now to a global stage, Andrés’ journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity. His story showcases the transformative impact of an ISE education, not just in shaping meaningful careers but in driving a more sustainable future. With his unwavering dedication and growing influence in the field, we can’t wait to see where Andrés’ journey takes him next.
