RU Research Fund

Reykjavik University (RU) offers PhD Student Grants through the RU Research Fund, which was established to support and promote high-quality research. Operating under the Decision of the RU Executive Board from September 11, 2018, the fund plays a key role in fostering an environment of research excellence and enhancing the University's academic reputation.

The grants are competitive, with the size of the fund determining the number of supported applications and the establishment of a cut-off point. Oversight and strategic responsibility for the RU Research Fund lies with the RU Executive Board, while the operational management of the application and evaluation process is carried out by RU Research Services.

These grants represent RU’s commitment to advancing research innovation, empowering PhD students to excel in their fields and contribute to the University's mission of academic leadership.

PhD Student Grants from RU Research Fund

RU Research Fund has awarded 14 new Ph.D. Student Grants. The total amount awarded to new projects is 96.823.200 ISK. The Fund received 24 new applications. Below is information on new projects receiving grants from the Fund 2025.

Each grant is 573.600ISK per month (salaries + salary-related costs) for max one year + a max 300.000 ISK travel grant. Besides new projects funded in 2025, 7 projects will receive a continuous grant (2nd or 3rd year). The total amount granted to continuous projects is 43.430.400 ISK.

The Fund also granted a special travel grant to 7 doctoral students who do not have a research grant, amount 2.100.000 ISK. Hence, the total amount allocated in 2025 is 142.353.600 ISK.
